Celebrate National Pollinator Month with Town & Country Nurseries

June is National Pollinator Month, and Town & Country Nurseries is excited to celebrate with our community by promoting the importance of pollinators and native plants. This June, we’re introducing our Pollinator Garden Program, featuring a wide selection of specially designated native and pollinator plants that will be available throughout the month, easily identified with our unique pollinator plant stickers.

Why Pollinators Matter

Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, birds, and other insects, play a crucial role in the health of our ecosystems. They are responsible for the pollination of about 75% of flowering plants and nearly 35% of global food crops. Without pollinators, many of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts we enjoy wouldn’t exist, leading to a significant impact on our food supply and biodiversity.

The Role of Native Plants

Native plants are those that have evolved naturally in a particular region and are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions. These plants are essential for providing the necessary habitat and food sources for local pollinators. Unlike non-native species, native plants support a diverse range of wildlife, helping to maintain a balanced and healthy ecosystem. They require less water and maintenance, making them an environmentally friendly choice for gardeners.

Town & Country’s Commitment to Pollinators

To support our local pollinators and promote the use of native plants, Town & Country Nurseries will be planting a dedicated pollinator garden in Haddam. This garden will showcase a variety of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and herbs specifically chosen to attract and sustain pollinators. Visitors can explore the garden to get inspiration for their own pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Selection of Pollinator-Friendly Plants

During June, you’ll find a wide selection of plants that are perfect for creating your own pollinator paradise. Our specially designated native and pollinator plants will include:

  • Annuals: Bright and colorful, these plants provide a continuous source of nectar throughout the growing season. Look for favorites like zinnias, cosmos, and marigolds.
  • Perennials: These plants come back year after year, offering a reliable source of food for pollinators. Choose from coneflowers, milkweed, and bee balm.
  • Shrubs: Providing both food and shelter, shrubs like butterfly bush and Rose of Sharon are excellent choices for attracting butterflies and bees.
  • Herbs: Many herbs, such as lavender, thyme, and oregano, are not only great for cooking but also for attracting pollinators with their fragrant flowers.
